Lagunitas: The beers with personalities

It is a well-known fact that people are more relaxed and open to conversation when they are offered food and beverages. Beer has long been one of the preferred drinks for social settings. There is nothing like a nice cold beer on a hot day, during a football game, or just a few to pass around at a friends and family get together to set the atmosphere. Lagunitas beer has been designed to encompass any social bracket so that the conversation can flow, and the taste buds can be rewarded. Lagunitas beer is not being sold at Monroeville Beer in Monroeville, PA

From East to West

Lagunitas beer has evolved from its Chicago roots. The company, though technically founded in that area, has had breweries in St. Lewis, Memphis, Walker Creek and the highlands of Quincy. However, the brewery thought that there needed to be a central brewery which was socially oriented as well as in a location which would encourage growth for the company. In 1993-1994 the company established its main brewery in Northern California. Since that time they have been goal oriented on presenting beers that help stimulate conversation and promote social interaction.

Year round brews

If you are looking for traditional labels and categories, you will not find them in the Lagunitas beers. Their selections are quite unique (and somewhat comically labeled). Their signature selection would have to be their Little Sumpin variety. However, there are quite a few selections to choose from. Here are a few of the year round brews that are offered.

  • Little Sumpin Sumpin Ale – This is a white wheat ale. As far as taste goes, those which like a pale ale or beers with a softer flavor would enjoy this selection best.
  • IPA (India Pale Ale) – Made with 45 different hops and 65 different malts, this selection is truly filled with flavor. Langunitas has based the recipe for the IPA on the ancient style. According to Langunitas the formula used is as old as the routes which were used to seek out India but not as old as the equator.
  • Pale Ale – Otherwise known as the NEW DOGTOWN, the brew is based upon the original brew of Langunitas but with newer brewing and a slightly different ingredient base. The overall taste is revamped to minimize the carbonation common with certain ales.
  • PILZ – A Czech sytle pilsner, this is the only Lager offered by Languanitas. Filled with sazz hops as well as being a fermented with a bottom fed process, the result is a nice smooth flavor suitable for any lager drinker.
  • Censored – Possibly the most comical of their selections. The beer was originally called the Kronik, but the labeling powers that be rejected the proposed name. As a joke Languanitas put a censored label over the word Kronik and sent it back. They approved the label.  The actual taste of the beer has nothing to do with Cannabis, but offers a nice roasted flavor hops. The selection is a bit darker than the IPA or the PILZ. However, the popularity and the flavor are just as in demand as their other selections.

Like most beer companies, Languanitas offers seasonal selections as well. Currently they have a selection of nine seasonal beers. These are:

Languanitas Sucks (brown sugar substitute Ale) offered November through January

Cappuccino Stout (yes, it is coffee based) offered January and March

Undercover Investigation Shut- Down (their extremely bitter ale) offered February and April,

Nighttime for the birds, Little Sumpin Extra (Like the year round Little Sumpin but with more hops for a stronger flavor) offered in July

Imperial Red (a dark and hearty brew)

Little Sumpin Wild ( much like the other Sumpin beers but with Westmalle Trappist yeast) offered August to October

Brown Shugga (a sweet release brew crafted loosely after Olde GnarlyWine Ale) offered November 2014 through January 2015

and last but certainly not least Eyeball (designed for morning consumption. Smooth yet with enough kick to get you going) offered October and December.

What is with the labels?

As stated, Languanitas beer is focused on social interaction as well as a great beer. The labels are meant to be comical and to spark a conversation as well as perhaps make you laugh. Apart from this, the company wanted their consumers to feel as though they are more people oriented then profit oriented. I believe that they have effectively conveyed their desire.
