Church Brew Works Beers

Not sacraments but definitely higher standards than most

Monroeville Beer & Lottery in Monroeville, PA has acquired quite a unique bottled brew. The Church Brew works beer is now offered by the case. Do not let the name throw you off. These are beers that have been produced with taste and quality in mind. So, how did these brews get such a name? The answer of course can be found in a church.

Industry, war, and modern times

The Church Brew works began during the industrial area in the late 1800s. When the city was in a birthing stage and when religious buildings were in demand the church came into being. However, as time passed the building became more than just a church. During the first and second world war, the building became a center location for those seeking solace during such a weighting era. As a result of the wars, the city, as a whole, suffered great financial losses.

Then during the 1950s the church was all but abandoned. It lay without use until 1996 when restoration efforts were put in effect by the Church Brew Works. Anything which could be used or restored was given painstaking attention to ensure the overall beauty of the church. Being that the business owners have a passion for brews, it is only natural that they incorporated this into the new restaurant and bar theme.

The two brew containers located as the center piece of the establishment should testify to the brewer’s assessment of their beer. Placed within the alter space the copper and blueish tanks demand attention. Once you get a taste of the flavor you will agree that the brew should be spotlighted.

The bottled brews

Due to the uniqueness of the brewery and the brewer’s drive for perfection, only two bottled beers are offered at this time. These are two beers are the Millennium Trippel and the Cherry Quadzilla. What is so exceptional about these two selections is the diversity between the two. The Millennium Trippel is a light brew and the Cherry Quadzilla is a heavy brew. Interesting that Church brew works would offer a light and a dark beer. Could such be metaphorical to their building’s original purpose. Perhaps.

The Light Side :Millennium Trippel Brew

Bubbled through the high carbonation content, this light beer is sure to go down smoothly. The brewers spent a great deal of time developing the soft malt flavor and the fruit filled aroma of this brew. The beer is perfect to replace a white wine or to drink on its own. Compared by some to a Champaign this beer is easily appropriate for celebrations as well. The diversity in which you can consume this beer is limitless. There is a mild alcohol effect in the taste.

If you do not want a strong barley flavor but want to have that nice light flavor then this is the beer for you. Tailored for year round consumption (as opposed to some light brews whose contents limit its drinkability to only certain seasons) you are sure to be satisfied.

The dark side: Cherry Quadzilla

From the name you can tell that this is no ordinary beer. As a Belgian ale, the brew presents itself  with a dark cherry appearance mixed with slight red hues. The beer has a nice barley flavor mixed with the sweetness of good malt. Yet, do not let the sweet malt flavor fool you. There is an intended bitterness and a mild alcohol flavor which tends to linger on the tongue, but this only adds to the enjoyment. The combination of the ingredients make give it a robust flavor while at the same time ensuring that you taste the fullness of the beer, not just the barley.

Cherry Quadzilla is an excellent brew to accompany a steak dinner, but can just as easily be drunk at a football game or with your weekend crew.

You need not go all the way to St. John’s church to get these beers. They are offered locally at Monroeville Beer & Lottery.
